The New York-born musician was found unresponsive in his room in Chicago's Raffaello Hotel yesterday (October 8), The AP reports.
Welsh started playing with Weezer in 1998, but left in 2001 after suffering a mental breakdown. His focus shifted towards a career in art in later years.
A message posted on the star's official Facebook page this afternoon read: "We are deeply saddened to announce that Mikey Welsh passed away unexpectedly today. He will forever be remembered as an amazing father, artist and friend. May he rest in peace."
Weezer also paid tribute to Welsh on their website, describing him as "vital, essential, wild, and amazing."
The band wrote: "[Welsh was] a unique talent, a deeply loving friend and father, and a great artist is gone, but we will never forget him."
The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said autopsy results will be available this afternoon (October 9).
