The frontwoman for Florence + the Machine said that she can identify closely with tragic female vocalists from the past.
"You've chosen a lifestyle that leads to real elation and real devastation," Welch told NME. "It can be so lonely.
"You sacrifice having a normal life for this dream and it's so fantastic, but the exhaustion in your emotions and your body can become really massive."
Welch added that she sometimes feels "exhausted" when performing to a live audience, and noted that singers can feel "so exposed" at times.
The band's only live performance of 2011 at the Hackney Empire later this month sold out within one minute of being on sale.
Florence + the Machine will release their second album Ceremonials in the UK on October 31, and in the US on November 1.
