Noel Gallagher has taken the early lead over Matt Cardle in the race for this week's album number one.

The former Oasis guitarist is currently outselling the X Factor champion's debut LP by two copies to one, according to the Official Charts Company.

Gallagher has accumulated first day sales of 55,000 with his debut solo effort Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, while Cardle has sold 28,000 copies of Letters.

However, the Official Charts Company has insisted that the gap will close later in the week as supermarket sales start to filter in.

Amazon previously predicted that Gallagher would be victorious in the album chart battle, as he had built up 13% more pre-orders of his record.

When asked if he thought he had a chance of reaching the top spot, Gallagher told Digital Spy: "I can't see it being number one as it's out the same week as Matt Cardle."

He added: "Chart positions are for people with manbags who get to work at 11am because they've been at a digital meeting.

"It definitely won't affect the band - I'm on my own label and funded it with my kids' school fund - I'm hardly going to drop myself."

Both albums are out to buy physically and digitally now.
