Wilson announced this week that she will record her own versions of some of her favourite songs from the '60s and '70s for AM/FM.
The Sleepless in Seattle actress described the LP as a passion project, saying that she has always "felt more comfortable with music than acting."
Wilson is not entirely new to the music world, having produced the ABBA-inspired film Mamma Mia! and starred on Broadway in Chicago.
She told the press at the Billboard/Hollywood Reporter Film & TV Music Conference: "So many people have tried to do it and came before me. I want people to think I deserve to be here, and not someone who woke up one morning and decided to make an album."
AM/FM will be released on February 7, 2012 on Decca Records.
Wilson and Hanks's son Chet is also pursuing a music career as a rapper.
