Houston plays a jealous mother to Sparks's aspiring young singer in the remake of the 1976 film Sparkle, which is inspired by the story of Diana Ross and the Supremes.
The 'I Will Always Love You' singer revealed that she is incredibly impressed by Sparks's talent and poise.
"She knows how to look… Her voice is like an angel's. I think [Sparkle is] going to let the world see that the 'American Idol' that was chosen and won is truly capable of handling it," Houston told ET Online.
Houston also commented that she jumped at the chance to appear in an updated version of Sparkle.
"I got a call from my partner Debra Martin and she said, 'You're not gonna believe this, but Sparkle's been picked up and they want to do a film'… And I was like, 'You're kidding?'"
Mike Epps and Cee Lo Green will also appear in Sparkle, while R Kelly is to write original songs for the project.
Sparkle is expected to be released in 2012.
