The 'Called Out in the Dark' band's frontman told The Guardian that people made the comments as a result of the group's lack of off-stage antics.
"Boring can mean many things," he said. "People see us personally as being boring. I don't think I am, but I understand it.
"We don't cause any ruckus, we don't slag off other bands, we don't court controversy and, for many people, controversy annihilates boredom."
He added: "If you're shagging your way up and down the red carpet and calling everyone c**ts then you can't be boring, but we hide in the shadows. Some bands do that and are seen as mysterious. We're seen as boring."
Of the ubiquity of some Snow Patrol songs, Lightbody said: "I'm aware they're like nails down a blackboard to some people.
"I do want to connect with people, even if I'm writing a really personal thing. Part of me must want my songs to be universal."

In 2009, Lightbody said that he is still a fan of 'Chasing Cars' and described the track as "our favourite son, daughter, whatever its sex is".
The same year, he responded to criticism from Manic Street Preachers bassist Nicky Wire by claiming that Snow Patrol "only seem dull on the surface" and that he believes their music is "vital and passionate".
