The stars, along with Ke$ha and Jennifer Lopez, are all allegedly on the official nominees list for the awards ceremony, but will instead compete for the 'Best Pop Recording' gong, according to Examiner.
GaGa is said to be nominated for her single 'Judas', while Rihanna's 'S&M', Ke$ha's 'We R Who We R' and Spears's 'Till The World Ends' are also up for the award.
The website reports that several members of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences have already been told about the change, while a leaked list of 116 potential nominees for 'Best Dance Recording' has reportedly also omitted the popstars.
The change was made to include more DJs and hardcore dance acts such as Afrojack, Calvin Harris, Skrillex and Benny Benassi in the category.
The 2012 Grammy Awards nominees will be announced on November 30. The 54th Grammy Awards will take place on February 12, 2012 at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles.
