Mike Skinner has admitted that he has always wanted to produce music rather than perform it.

The singer confessed that he never intended to become a frontman of a band and that he entered the industry to be able to work on production.

The star made the revelation in a new video recorded by Vice magazine, which sees Skinner and former The Music singer Rob Harvey working on their new project The D.O.T.

Speaking about writing new material in the studio, Skinner explained: "Most songs you do write are s**t. My strike rate is awful!"

He later added: "Believe it or not I never wanted to be a lyricist or a performer. The reason I got into this was because I wanted to be a producer."

Skinner retired his former band The Streets this past weekend. He invited the audience up on stage for one last drink during the band's final gig.

It is expected that Skinner and Harvey's new project The D.O.T. will release material in the New Year.
