The classic 1991 track will be released as a limited edition 7'' single, in an apparent attempt to boost its chances of beating the X Factor Winner's Single to the Christmas number one.
A Facebook campaign was launched recently to follow in Rage Against the Machine's footsteps in 2009. The track is currently one of the favourites to win the race with various bookmakers.
A message on the band's official Facebook page reads: "We've heard about the campaign to get 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' by Nirvana for Christmas Number One in the UK (supporting the children's charity Rhythmix) and it looks like the label will re-release the single 7" as a limited edition for the fans!"
Nirvana will also face competition from the Military Wives Choir and Karl Pilkington in the Christmas singles chart.
