Shaun Ryder has heavily hinted that the Happy Mondays will reunite next year.

The singer said that he has spoken to a few of the band's original members about the possibility of performing together in 2012.

Ryder told The Sun: "I won't say which members of the original lineup I've spoken to but there is a lot to look forward to next year."

Reports of the band reuniting surfaced last week, but a Happy Mondays' spokesperson said the rumours were a "bit of a leap" while not ruling out the prospect of them doing something next year.

The group first split in 1993, but have since briefly reunited in 1999 and 2004.

Ryder recently stated that he was "a caricature" during his time in the Happy Mondays, saying that he played a "warped version" of himself.
