The son of blues singer Etta James has said that his mother is "still fighting" as she receives treatment in hospital.

Donto James thanked fans for their support and spoke of his mother's fondness for the Christmas holiday season.

"She always felt Christmastime was for the children," Donto told the Los Angeles Times on Saturday (Christmas Eve). "The biggest thing she ever wanted was for people to be with her, eat with her. That's what she wanted.

"She is still fighting. That's the thing, my mother is still fighting."

Donto added that he hoped his mother would be well enough to join the family in a small celebration at the hospital if doctors can wean her from sedation on Christmas Day.

Etta was revealed to be terminally ill with end-stage leukaemia by her live-in doctor Elaine James earlier this month.

The singer also has dementia, and was taken to hospital to be treated for an infection in May of this year.

Donto did not confirm reports that his mother had been intubated and was using a machine to help her breathe, but confirmed that she is receiving hospital treatment for "a couple of issues".
