The band were due to play a series of dates from next week, but have had to cancel the shows after frontman Anthony Kiedis underwent foot surgery.
The singer had to have a crushed sesamoid bone removed from his foot, as well as correction surgery for a detached flexor tendor, reports Billboard.
The tour will now start in St. Petersburg, Florida on March 29 and the band have assured fans that the setback will not affect their European tour this summer.
Red Hot Chili Peppers' European stint will include three shows in the UK and Ireland at Knebworth on June 23, Sunderland's Stadium Of Light on June 24 and Dublin's Croke Park on June 26.
