The band insisted that they are happy with their previous records - 2007 debut Colour It In and 2009's Wall of Arms - but thought they could better them third time around.
Speaking to Xfm about their new album Given to the Wild, band member Felix White explained: "We're proud of Wall of Arms, really happy with it and glad of where it got us but we knew immediately as soon as we finished it that we could do more."
He added: "There are a few songs on the record that I think the rest of the record might not have matched."
The Maccabees' new LP Given to the Wild is currently on course to gain the band their first UK number one position.
