The Aerosmith frontman sang 'The Star Spangled Banner' at the AFC Championship Game between the Baltimore Ravens and the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, Massachusetts today (January 22).
The 63-year-old appeared with his trademark scarf, complete with the Patriots logo in red, white and blue sequins.
Tyler was a popular choice to sing the anthem due to his local roots in Boston, and was cheered as he was greeted by the announcer.
However, his performance has been treated with derision by several commentators, with Fox's Jason Whitlock tweeting: "Steven Tyler far more obscene than Janet Jackson's t*tty."
Sports site Bleacher Report also wrote: "Watch Steven Tyler butcher the National Anthem."
The 11th season of American Idol kicked off last week on Fox.
