Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody inspired by Nirvana, The Breeders

Gary Lightbody has said that Nirvana inspired him to form a band.

The Snow Patrol frontman told Metro that seeing rock and grunge groups as a teenager had a big impact on him.

Asked about his first gig, Lightbody said: "The Red Hot Chili Peppers supported by Rollins Band in Belfast's Ulster Hall in 1991.

"My second was Nirvana supported by The Breeders. That's a lineup that hasn't been topped."

He added: "Nirvana became a massive part of my life and kick-started my desire to be in a band.

"People thought Northern Ireland was a scary place at the time, so any band who played Belfast before the ceasefire we ended up loving forever."

Snow Patrol are currently on a nationwide tour, which ends with three shows at London's O2 Arena.
