The singer-songwriter, who has been shortlisted for MTV's 'Brand New For 2012' prize, explained that her sound has evolved since she first began writing at the age of 14.
Charli XCX revealed: "I did get into the music world quite young, I guess. I was 14 when I made my first album and I was just making music that I was listening to - and I just wanted to replicate it.
"Over the past four years of working on the record it has kind of matured and changed a lot. I guess I'd call the sound I'm making now goth-pop. It's quite dark, mysterious and grungy."
The star has been shortlisted for the 'Brand New For 2012' accolade along with Lana Del Rey, Conor Maynard and Delilah, among others.
The ten nominees will go head-to-head to become MTV's Brand New for 2012 champion, with the winner to be announced on February 1.
