Conor Maynard: 'MTV Brand New For 2012 gave me confidence boost'

Conor Maynard has revealed that appearing on MTV's Brand New For 2012 shortlist has given him a boost in confidence.

The singer admitted that he was shocked to find out he had made the list and would be competing with other artists including Lana Del Rey, Charli XCX and Delilah.

Maynard told MTV: "When I heard I was nominated for MTV's Brand New For 2012, it was just a massive shock.

"Ever since I was little I have been watching MTV and it was one of those dreams, like, 'Ah wow, imagine if one day I was on it'. It really gives you a big boost in confidence and it's a really cool feeling."

The star was signed to a record deal after posting videos of himself performing covers on YouTube, which then went on to gain millions of views.

He added: "Out of nowhere I got contacted by people who work with Ne-Yo and that started a big buzz. People were like, 'Who is this kid that Ne-Yo wants to sign?'

"Since then I've been writing my debut album and have been working with all different producers, such as Jermaine Dupri and Midi Mafia."

The ten nominees will go head-to-head to become MTV's Brand New For 2012 champion, with the winner to be announced on February 1.
