The 26-year-old ARIA Award-nominated singer, who is best known for songs such as 'I Believe you Liar' and 'Rich Kids', is currently at Sydney Festival performing a mixture of her conceptual music, art and design. However, she explained that she couldn't do more than four shows because she finds the material too emotional.
Washington told The Australian: "It's because this music is sad, and when I wrote it I was really sad. When you do a tour you probably have to play your album about 300 times. I'd be f**ked if I'm going to do that."
The Melbourne-born musician said that she wrote the songs when she was in New York suffering from depression, explaining: "It's something I never thought I'd experience. The songs are about displacement, loneliness, grief and anger, anxiety."
While Washington said that she is "better" now, she added that she doesn't "really care if [she's] happy or not", because she "just want[s] to be working".
Her Insomnia show is made up of four movements entitled 'Opiate', 'Amphetamine', 'Barbiturate' and 'Nicotine'. She said of the format: "Those four words give it something to hang off. Otherwise it would be a big milky ball of madness."
