The group broke up in 2000 before frontman Folds embarked on a solo career, but he hinted last September that the group may record a follow-up to 1999's The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner
In a post on Twitter, Folds said: "It's happening fo sho - Day 1 in studio with Robert and Darren through March #NewBenFoldsFiveRecord."
He then posted a photograph of himself behind a piano together with his bandmates Robert Sledge and Darren Jessee.
Asked when fans would be able to hear the new material, Folds replied: "Spring release."
Folds has been a judge on talent show The Sing Off for the past three seasons.
The singer-songwriter was last November described as a "genius" by season three winners Pentatonix.
