The Maccabees have confessed that their record label was worried about their latest album.

The band released their third studio set Given to the Wild last month and the LP went on to place at number four on the UK chart.

However, guitarist Felix White admitted that their label Fiction Records expressed concern over the album's content, deeming it too experimental to become a commercial success.

He told the Daily Star: "Fiction were really worried. They thought we were making a concept album. They were talking about a low-key release. They thought it was going to be this lo-fi, weird-sounding record."

White also described the band's disappointment of missing out on claiming the top spot with Given to the Wild after the album was number one in the midweek chart.

He explained: "We didn't think it would get near the Top 10, let alone nearly hit number one. It's funny and surreal seeing our name next to Bruno Mars and Adele in the chart.

"As a Fulham fan, I'm used to last-minute defeats. That sinking feeling when we lost out so late was very familiar."
