The band have entered the studio to write and record their ninth studio album, which will serve as the follow-up to 2009's 21st Century Breakdown.
Confirming the news on Twitter yesterday (February 14), frontman Billie Joe Armstrong posted: "Happy Valentine's day! Officially started recording the new record today. It's F**k Time!!!!"
Green Day have performed new songs as part of their live sets over the past few months, including 'Carpe Diem' and an Amy Winehouse tribute track titled 'Amy'.
Meanwhile, the band will bring their American Idiot musical to the UK later this year, following its closure on Broadway in the US last April.
