The British-born musician, who was a founding member of the rock group best known for hits such as 'You've Got the Gun' and 'Cassandra', passed away after a long battle with prostate cancer, reports the Herald Sun.
Shakespeare left Sherbet in 1976, shortly before their most famous hit single 'Howzat' was released. It was believed that he quit because of the pressures of fame and disputes over their earnings.
He once said: "I couldn't even go out the front of my house because there were all these girls just hanging on the fence. I left the band early in 1976 for reasons I don't want to discuss fully... but let's just say I wasn't happy about where all the money went."
Although he was replaced by musician Harvey James, Shakespeare still joined the band for various reunion concerts over the years.
He rejoined his former bandmates Garth Porter, Daryl Braithwaite, Tony Mitchell and Alan Sandow in February last year to play a benefit concert for James, who passed away from lung cancer last January.
