The 'American Boy' singer revealed that she chose to leave the UK in hopes of having more chart success in America, where she says R&B is taken more "seriously".
"It's so f**king hard for British artists to be taken seriously as R&B artists… It's frustrating," she told The AP. "I get a lot of [people saying], 'Yo Estelle, I can't sing R&B and be out here and make money. This is crazy'. And I'm looking at them like, 'I know. That's why I'm not there doing it'."
Estelle recently released her third studio album All of Me in the US, which comes nearly four years after the success of 'American Boy'.
The musician explained that she waited so long between albums to ensure that her songs were of the very highest quality.
"I always say there's a difference between cooked food and McDonald's," she quipped. "Your mum's homemade dinner - you enjoy this more than you enjoy the fast food that comes along and goes, and I strive to make homemade dinner every time I put out an album."
Estelle previously suggested that she considers All of Me to be a true comeback.
