While introducing Avicii at the Miami event, Madonna asked the crowd whether they had "seen Molly", using a street name for ecstasy. The DJ and producer said that the musician's comments were "counterproductive" and did not help counteract stereotypes about electronic and dance music culture.
van Dyk told Billboard: "Madonna was so stupid to actually call out drug abuse in front of a crowd of 18-year-olds. This is not what our music is about. It's really counterproductive.
"I don't think she was thinking much. The only thing she was probably thinking was, 'I need to connect with a young crowd', and she made the biggest mistake of her career."
Electronic producer Deadmau5 labelled Madonna a "f**king idiot" shortly after her comments were reported, writing on his Facebook page that her remarks equated to "unnecessary promotion of the s**t that really held EDM down for years".
Madonna made up with Deadmau5 on Monday evening (March 26) during a Twitter question and answer session to promote her new album MDNA, posting a picture with the message: "From one mouse to another, I don't support drug use and never have."
She also denied that she was referring to 'Molly' in the context of drugs, adding: "I was referring to the song 'Have You Seen Molly?', written by my friend Cedric Gervais who I almost worked with on my album."
