The former White Stripes musician, whose debut solo album Blunderbuss has just been released, was speaking to The Word.
He told the magazine: "[Being an artist is a] very dangerous choice to give yourself over and never go back.
"Whatever your name was before, and whoever you were, you don't get to be that person ever again. I can only imagine that's like going to war and coming back a completely different person."
He added that he sacrifices himself "24 hours a day" for his art.
The 'Seven Nation Army' star screened a gig live on Vevo tonight (April 27) for American Express's Unstaged web series.
It was also confirmed this week by producer Jerry Bruckheimer that White will score the movie The Lone Ranger.
