D'Angelo is to headline the 2012 Essence Music Festival.

The R&B singer will take to the stage in New Orleans this summer to perform songs from his new studio album James River.

The gig will mark D'Angelo first US concert in over ten years, following a long period of inactivity.

D'Angelo joins fellow Essence Music Festival headliners Aretha Franklin, Mary J Blige, Eve and Fantasia.

This year's Essence Music Festival is to be held at New Orleans's famed Super Dome from July 6 to July 8.

D'Angelo's upcoming album James River is expected to be released this summer. His last LP Voodoo topped the US album chart in 2000.
