Plan B has encouraged fans to wear earplugs to live music events.

The singer has urged music lovers to use the plugs to help protect themselves from tinnitus, which he suffers from himself.

"I've been in clubs, in the DJ booth, and just felt my ears going," he told BBC's Newsbeat. "It was so loud and I thought, 'This ain't good'."

The main symptom of tinnitus is a constant ringing tone or noise in the ear and it is estimated that almost 500,000 people in the UK suffer from the condition.

"So I had tinnitus for a while," he added. "I went and saw an ear specialist and got some ear plugs. It's all right now and I don't need them all the time but if you are a DJ or you produce, if you have the music loud you are damaging your ears."

Although there are methods to reduce the side effects of tinnitus, there are currently no known cures for the condition.

Coldplay's Chris Martin, Gary Numan and others are fronting a charity campaign titled Action on Hearing Loss alongside Plan B.

The singer's directorial debut iLL Manors opens in UK cinemas on June 6. The official soundtrack will follow on June 18.
