A rare 'backwards' photo of The Beatles' album Abbey Road has been sold at an auction.

The picture shows Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr walking over the iconic zebra crossing in the opposite direction to that on the classic album cover.

The photo was expected to sell £9,000 at the Bloomsbury auction house in central London, but ended up taking in £16,000 in less than one minute yesterday (May 22).

It also sees McCartney wearing sandals instead of the bare feet that he had in the original 1969 image.

Only six photographs were taken at the time by Iain Macmillan in just 10 minutes after a police officer held up traffic.

Last month it was revealed that a 'second generation' of The Beatles' sons may form their own band.
