The band, who will release Coexist as their second studio album on September 10, admitted that they have only just completed the record recently.
Singer Romy Madley Croft told NME that the title references "lost love – from exes or the person you're with now".
She added: "A lot of it is still personal, but I've been a bit more inspired by things that have happened to other people and putting myself in their shoes. But they're all love songs and some of them are sadder than others."
The trio began work on Coexist back in November 2011 with member Jamie xx, aka Jamie Smith, in charge of production duties for the project.
The xx are currently on a world tour playing various festivals across the globe and will next perform in the UK at Bestival on September 7.
