Coachella Festival location threatened by tax

By
Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival could be forced to find a new home if plans for a new local tax go ahead.

The Californian city of Indio is considering an admissions tax on entertainment events attended by over 2,500 people.

Promoter Goldenvoice, which also organises the Stagecoach music festival, has threatened to move the shows out of the Coachella Valley if the plan goes ahead.

President Paul Tollett told the Desert Sun that the tax would add $36 (£23) to each ticket, but refused to pass the rise onto festival-goers.

"If the tax initiative of putting $4 million to $6 million onto Coachella gets on the ballot, we're going to take off 2014; 2015 we'll be at a new facility outside of Indio," he said.

"We think this tax is outrageous for all the things we've done with Indio."

Goldenvoice had been attempting to buy land surrounding the Empire Polo Club site where the festival is normally held.

Coachella Festival will be held over two consecutive weekends again in 2013.

The first weekend of Coachella takes place between April 12 and April 14, with the second weekend scheduled for April 19 to April 21.
