The four have been been chosen by fans voting out of 60 musical acts from the past 60 years.

The award was created to coincide with the music magazine's 60th anniversary, with the final two to be announced in the coming weeks.

Voting can be undertaken via the publication's official website.

Freddie Mercury, Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson, Bob Dylan and Elvis Presley were among the artists who did not make the final four.

Liam Gallagher is expected to perform at next month's Olympic Games closing ceremony.

Alex Turner recently promised fans a "heavier" follow-up to 2011's Suck it and See.
