Damon Albarn: 'Bring back Top of the Pops'

By
Damon Albarn has called for BBC producers to bring back Top of the Pops.

Speaking to Absolute Radio ahead of Blur's set at BT London Live in Hyde Park tonight (August 12), Albarn told Dave Gorman that he still misses the show, which was cancelled in 2006.

"I still live in the world where Top of the Pops is on every Thursday. Unashamedly," said the singer. "I don't understand why it doesn't exist anymore, I never understood that decision... It doesn't make any sense."

Albarn said it would be "brilliant" if the show returned to screens to provide some "fun" music programming.

"I mean, I'm not harking back to the music," he clarified. "I'd like to hear new, fresh music, but just something that's a moment, that allows people to do something that has a commercial credibility but is also not so bloody conservative, do you know what I mean?"

When asked about the band's upcoming performance as part of the Olympics closing celebrations, Whitechapel-born Albarn said it felt great to be playing in his hometown.

"Geographically it's home... [and] it gives us a chance to play to a lot of people in London. In the sense of the Olympics it's nice to get involved and celebrate this amazing city," he explained.

"I think that's what's happening at the moment. You get a sense that everyone's feeling pretty good about London, and that I'm there with that because I love this city."
