One Direction are the new Spice Girls, says Spector's Fred Macpherson

One Direction are going to be the new Spice Girls, according to Spector frontman Fred Macpherson.

The indie band's lead singer told Digital Spy that he believes pop music is in "rude health" and that One Direction in particular are deserving of their superstar status.

On the current state of the charts, Macpherson said: "Some of it's good, some of it's crap. All the charts really measure is what's got through all the cracks; it's what people agree on, and people only ever agree on mundane.

"I still think there's brilliant pop music, though. One Direction are going to be the new Cliff Richard and the Shadows, or the new Spice Girls. They're a f**king tour de force. What's quite good about pop music right now is that it feels like there's all to play for."

Macpherson went on to suggest that 2012 will one day be known for house DJs like David Guetta.

"This 44-year-old man pressing play and occasionally words light up behind him saying, 'Put your f**king hands up'; it's great that we have something we'll be able to remember 2012 by," he added of the 'Titanium' star.

"It doesn't make sense now but will in the context of time."

Spector's debut album Enjoy It While It Lasts is out now.
