The Voice UK runner-up will release 'Single Tear' as the lead cut from his second studio album on October 15.
James has worked with Fraser T Smith on the song and has spoken to Digital Spy about the story behind the track.
"'Single Tear' is not about a specific person or situation, it's more a bunch of thoughts about how I've felt about myself and my life in the past few years," James said.
"It's for anyone who ever broke up with someone, lost someone or misses someone. It's for people who have experienced heartache in any way. The concept is putting a brave face on because you have to.
"It's an emotional song - it means a lot to me - so I just wanted it to sound more epic. I wanted it to be dark - that's why drums are loud and there's quite a lot of bottom end to it. It's quite dramatic."
James also confirmed that his new album would follow shortly after 'Single Tear' and that he hopes to perform it at his one-off headline show in London on November 21.
