The star revealed that her second album Halcyon is a departure from her debut Lights and has refreshed her outlook as a singer.
"I do feel like a new artist again because my album is quite different to the first," Goulding told BBC News. "I remember when I started writing this record I was determined to make it not about love.
"But then when I did start writing it I went through a break-up, so the record ended up being about that. It's easier to write sad songs, I think."
The star explained that new single 'Anything Could Happen' is the happiest song she's ever written, which is why she decided to release it.
Meanwhile, Goulding's single 'Lights' recently peaked at number two on the US Hot 100 chart, despite being officially released in May 2011.
"The single I've put out over there has been a bizarre anomaly," she said. "Nobody expected it to get anywhere near number one."
Ellie Goulding's new single 'Anything Could Happen' will be released in the UK on September 30, while new album Halcyon follows on October 8.
