The Foo Fighters closed Reading festival with a two-and-a-half hour set that Grohl claimed would be "the last show for a long time".
Grohl dedicated the track 'These Days' to Cobain and Novoselic, saying: "I'd like to dedicate this song to a couple of people who couldn't be here tonight. This one's for Krist and this one's for Kurt.''
Nirvana played perhaps their most iconic gig at the Reading Festival in 1992, at the peak of their success.
Grohl reminisced about the show on-stage, and even relived one its most memorable moments.
He said: "In 1992 when Nirvana played here, the last show we ever played in England, you sang 'Happy Birthday' to my mom. Here's your chance."
The 43-year-old then brought his mother out on to the stage, where she was once again treated to a thousands-strong rendition of 'Happy Birthday'.
