The Up All Night boyband took home three trophies, ahead of Chris Brown and MIA, who each scored two.
Rihanna collected the biggest award of the night, winning 'Video of the Year' for 'We Found Love', while there were also VMAs for Nicki Minaj, Coldplay, Drake and Calvin Harris.
One Direction scooped 'Best Pop Video' and 'Most Share-Worthy Video' for their debut single 'What Makes You Beautiful', and were also named 'Best New Artist'.
Brown won 'Best Male Video' and 'Best Choreography' for 'Turn Up The Music', and MIA's 'Bad Girls' got 'Best Cinematography' and 'Best Editing'.

Elsewhere, Minaj's 'Starships' was judged the 'Best Female Video' and Coldplay's 'Paradise' took 'Best Rock Video'.
Drake's promo for 'HYFR' with Lil Wayne was 'Best Hip-Hop Video', and the ceremony's resident DJ Calvin Harris picked up 'Best Electronic Dance Music Video' for 'Feel So Close'.
Demi Lovato's 'Skyscraper' was named the 'Best Video With a Message', and there were technical awards for Katy Perry, Beyoncé and Skrillex.
The Video Music Awards took place at the Staples Center arena in Los Angeles and were hosted by Kevin Hart.
The MTV VMAs 2012 can be seen in full tonight (September 7) at 9pm on MTV in the UK.
