The Beatles' 'Love Me Do' anniversary vinyl recalled

By
EMI has been forced to recall a vinyl re-release of The Beatles' 'Love Me Do', after pressing a version of the 1962 hit without Ringo Starr on it.

The re-issue was scheduled to coincide with the anniversary of the band's first single on October 5, but has had to be taken off sale after the label noticed the mistake, reports The Examiner.

Instead of reproducing the recording featuring Starr that was made on September 4, 1962, EMI accidentally duplicated the Please, Please Me album version of the track, on which session drummer Andy White played drums.

White was brought in by producer George Martin, who after having heard former band member Pete Best and his replacement Starr play on the track, was said to be unhappy with both recordings.

Although the version with White on drums went on to be used in the first US pressings of the single, this year's commemorative re-issue was supposed to feature the full band line-up and the exact same track that was granted a UK release.

Richard Porter of www.beatlesinlondon.com received an early copy of the disc and confirmed that it contains White's version of the song.

"On playing the single, the mistake is obvious," he said. "The version on it is not the original single version, but the version with Andy White on drums and Ringo on tambourine, recorded on September 11, 1962.

"The version that should have been on it has Ringo on drums that was recorded on September 4."

EMI has reportedly informed UK record dealers of the recall and told them that there are currently "no plans to make the correct version". The label also announced that it was under strict instructions from The Beatles' Apple label to destroy copies of the vinyl.
