Adele was always the first choice to record the new Bond theme, according to the film's producers.

Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson denied rumours Muse were in the running to record the track after fans speculated their song 'Supremacy' was intended to soundtrack Skyfall.

Asked by Metro if Muse were ever considered, they replied: "No, Adele was always our first choice."

However, the producers admitted they would have liked the late Amy Winehouse to have recorded a Bond theme.

"She would have been great, wonderful," Wilson said.

Broccoli added: "She's an enormous artist still today. It's a tragic ending to her life but she's with us forever."

Adele's 'Skyfall' has fast become one of the most successful Bond themes in recent music memory.

The track has peaked at number two on the UK singles chart and eight on the US Hot 100.

The latest instalment of James Bond, Skyfall, will be in cinemas from October 26.
