The Beatles named biggest-selling group in UK singles chart history

The Beatles have been named the biggest-selling group in UK singles chart history.

The four-piece from Liverpool have sold 22.1 million singles over 50 years to become the best-selling group in the UK ever, based on single sales.

Queen are in second place, having shifted 12.8 million singles, while ABBA are just behind in third place having shifted 11.3 million singles, according to The Official Charts Company.

The Rolling Stones are at four with sales of 10.1 million, while Oasis complete the top five with 9.079 million singles sold.

Further down the chart, the Spice Girls are at seven, Boyzone are at ten and Westlife clock in at number 16.

The Official Charts Company has released the data in celebration of the singles chart's 60th anniversary, which lands on the week beginning November 11.

The official top 20 biggest-selling groups of all-time are as follows:

1. The Beatles - 22.1 million
2. Queen - 12.8 million
3. ABBA - 11.3 million
4. The Rolling Stones - 10.1 million
5. Oasis - 9.079 million
6. Take That - 9.078 million
7. Spice Girls - 8 million
8. Bee Gees - 7.6 million
9. U2 - 7.5 million
10. Status Quo - 7.2 million
11. Boyzone - 7.1 million
12. Blondie - 7.037 million
13. Black Eyed Peas - 7.034 million
14. Boney M - 6.859 million
15. Slade - 6.856 million
16. Westlife - 6.830 million
17. UB40 - 6.6 million
18. Madness - 6.15 million
19. Police - 6.1 million
20. Wham! - 5.9 million
