The singer, who announced the follow-up to 2010's /\/\ /\ Y /\ earlier this year, appeared at the Museum of Modern Art in Queens, New York yesterday and spoke about the inspiration behind the album.
Spin reports that while MIA - real name Mathangi Arulpragasam - would not reveal the content of the upcoming LP, she spoke to the audience about the spiritual journey she had untaken and the basis for the record's title.
MIA displayed mood boards and explained that the record comes out of "spirituality on the internet as it happens". Among the images were two green parrots.
"I was searching for parrots on Google and I found Matangi, who is parrot green," she said. As well as being the name of a Hindu wisdom goddess, it is also the birth name of the performer.
The album, which was expected to be released in December 2012 and include the single 'Bad Girls', will now debut in 2013.
MIA previously described the LP as "like Paul Simon on acid".
