The British boyband continued their awards success with three wins for 'Best New Act', 'Best Fans' and 'Best UK and Ireland Act'. The group did not appear at the ceremony, but pre-recorded a thank you message that was shown at the event.
Taylor Swift also won three awards, emerging victorious in the 'Best Female', 'Best Live' and 'Best Look' categories. Lana Del Rey presented Swift with her 'Best Female' trophy.
Swift won the 'Best Female' award against stiff competition from Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry and Pink.
The late Whitney Houston was honoured with the 'Global Icon' accolade with a tribute led by Alicia Keys and voiced by Beyoncé.
Keys said: "Whitney Houston had an incredible ability to captivate and mesmerise us.
"As a little girl I looked up to her so much, and seeing her perform with that voice and that presence allowed me to dream of creating music that touched people in the same way."
Meanwhile, Justin Bieber was also a big winner this year with a trio of awards. He won in the 'Best Male', 'Best Pop' and the 'Best World Stage' categories.
Carly Rae Jepsen's 'Call Me Maybe' earned the star this year's 'Best Song' trophy, and she was also the winner of the 'Best Push' award. She also crowd-surfed during a performance of her award-winning hit.
Psy won the 'Best Video' award for his viral hit 'Gangnam Style', and Lana Del Rey was awarded 'Best Alternative'.
Other acts were less successful, with Rihanna failing to win any of her six categories. Lady GaGa also failed to win any awards from her three nominations.
Other victors included Linkin Park for 'Best Rock', David Guetta for 'Best Electronic' and Nicki Minaj for 'Best Hip-Hop'.
Performances at the ceremony came from The Killers, No Doubt and Rita Ora. Taylor Swift drew the night to a close with a rendition of her hit 'We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together'.
