The drummer, who left REM in 1997, rejoined the band to play songs from the early stages of their career.
They were officially inducted by Eddie Vedder, the frontman for Pearl Jam, who described their music "truly all-encompassing".
Vedder told the BBC, "They used every colour on the palette, they invented colours on their own and they put up this huge mural of music and sound and emotion."
Upon induction REM frontman Michael Stipe told how his late grandmother had felt that the acronym REM stood for 'remember every moment'. He then said, "...and this is a moment I shall never forget."
