Metallica's back catalogue has been made available on Spotify for the first time.

The band allowed their tracks to be listed on the music streaming service after taking ownership of their master recordings.

Spotify announced the news at a New York event featuring Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich and Spotify investor Sean Parker, who co-founded Napster.

Ulrich famously launched legal action against Parker ten years ago after Metallica's music ended up on Napster.

"When [Parker] and I saw each other a few months ago, we could see that we had been put down as adversaries," Ulrich said yesterday (December 6).

"We realise we had much more in common and sitting down was long overdue. We were younger, maybe somewhat more ignorant. [Parker and I] sat down and had a heart-to-heart."

Spotify revealed at the event that it now has 20 million active users worldwide. The service has also added a feature that allows users to follow each other, as well as celebrities and musicians.

Metallica confirmed earlier this month that they had struck a deal with Warner Music Group to regain control of their material via new label Blackened Recordings.
