Joy Williams and John Paul White scrapped UK dates last month, as well as 2013 shows in New Zealand and Australia, due to "internal discord and irreconcilable differences".
A statement from the band at the time indicated that new music was likely for next year, but there has since been speculation that The Civil Wars were headed for a split because of creative problems.
Williams suggested a more optimistic future for The Civil Wars this week when she appeared to reveal that they are recording new songs.
"I'm in the studio right now, listening to some new @thecivilwars songs," she tweeted on Thursday (December 20).
Williams has not issued any further comment on a possible new Civil Wars album.
The group's first full-length album Barton Hollow charted high in both the US and the UK and earned them two Grammy Awards.
White and Williams formed The Civil Wars in 2008 after meeting each other at a writers' retreat in Nashville, TN.
