Apple has announced it will start selling songs for all MP3 players through its iTunes software.

Until now only users of the Apple iPod have been able to buy and download songs through the programme. Now others will be able to get songs "unlocked" for any player or mobile phone.

The tracks, more expensive than the iPod-only versions by 20p, will cost a standard 99p and also be of better audio quality. Current customers can upgrade their old versions for 20p.

The company revealed the news at a joint press conference with EMI today. The record company said its entire digital catalogue would be available in the new project within a month.

Apple chief Steve Jobs commented: "We are simply giving people an option." He spoke before a performance by Damon Albarn's new band The Good, The Bad and The Queen.

Reports that Apple would announce that Beatles tracks are finally to go online was proved wrong.
