Report: Global music sales will fall

Global music sales will continue to fall as more people buy online, according to a new study.

The report from Enders Analysis predicts overall sales in 2009 will be $23 billion - about half the value from 1999. It blames the fall on internet retail for encouraging people to pick individual tracks they want instead of buying a whole album.

Claire Enders, from the company, spoke to BBC World Service about recent change in the industry. She explained: "The core thesis in our report is that it's essentially adoption of digital technology that is eating the industry alive, and it's taken a number of different forms, in particular, piracy, copying of music, creating compilations for oneself, or handing them around to one's friends.

"And so there's been more dramatic change in the record industry in the last decade than probably any other industry has experienced."

The trend has been blamed for problems at traditional retailers, with Tower Records going bankrupt in the US and HMV recently issuing two profit warnings.
