They will be joined at Wembley Stadium on July 7 by bands including Duran Duran, Keane, Snow Patrol, the Black Eyed Peas and Razorlight.
Live Earth gigs will take place on seven continents in order to highlight the dangers of climate change. All profits will go to organisations including the Alliance for Climate Protection, the Climate Group and Stop Climate Chaos.
Tickets, which will be allocated by ballot, will be available to buy from April 18. Fans can register their interest online from 12pm on Friday.
Former US Vice President Al Gore, who is one of the event's organisers, said: "We hope Live Earth will launch a global campaign, giving a critical mass of people around the world the tools they need to help solve the climate crisis."
