However, critics have had mixed feelings about the 90-minute insight into Beyoncé's world, with some suggesting the film is nothing more than a vanity project.

"Why don't we ever see her - even in bed in the middle of the night - without beautiful, flowing, perfectly styled hair?" Entertainment Weekly wrote.

They went on to add: "[The film is] a delicate mix of the calculated and confessional, designed to let us just far enough into Knowles's world to keep us interested in her next tour, album, soda allegiance, etc."

The Washington Post criticised the contradictory nature of the documentary, noting that, while Beyoncé wishes media intrusion didn't play a part in her career, the film relies heavily on the audience already knowing about her life.

"I don't know how anyone could make sense of Life Is But a Dream without having followed Beyoncé's every move and every high note as reported by the multimedia infotainment sphere," the publication wrote.

They later added: "Life Is But a Dream has no through-line, no linear narrative. It's more like a hallucinatory advertisement for success, and to her credit Beyoncé put the word 'dream' in the title."

Pitchfork also commented on the lack of narrative during the film, but added: "It is gorgeous to look at, though."

People praised the documentary, saying it had "raw, emotional moments", especially concerning Beyoncé's revelation of a past miscarriage.

They added that Life Is But a Dream is a "90-minute whirlwind of music, dance and emotion", concluding with: "Long live the Queen B!"
