Billboard US singles chart to count YouTube streams

The US singles chart has included YouTube streams as part of its charting formula for the first time this week.

The Billboard Hot 100 chart already counts digital and physical sales, terrestrial and online radio plays, and on-demand audio streams.

However, the company and Nielson have decided to add YouTube data to multiple platforms across their charts.

VEVO videos and user-generated clips that use authorised audio will be counted, to reflect the "divergent platforms for music consumption in today's world", reports Billboard.

The YouTube additions mean's 'Harlem Shake' becomes the first Hot 100 number one single to top the tally thanks to its popularity on YouTube.

The song has been used in 30-second viral clips that have generated tens of million of views between them.

The UK singles chart recently made an adjustment to its rules by including instant-grat tracks that are offered as a free download when pre-ordering an album.
